Illustrated History Of High Jeweler Oscar Heyman To Be Released In April

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) will publish the first illustrated history of Oscar Heyman & Brothers, a U.S. high jewelry firm that has designed and crafted pieces for some of the world's most prestigious jewelry brands since 1912.

Oscar Heyman: The Jewelers’ Jeweler contains new photography of vintage and contemporary pieces created by the New York jewelry house, as well as design drawings from the firm’s archives. The book reveals Oscar Heyman’s important role in the story of high-style American jewelry.

The book is authored by Yvonne J. Markowitz, Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan, curator emerita of Jewelry at the MFA, and Elizabeth Hamilton, an independent writer and researcher. It is produced by MFA Publications, the publishing division of the museum. It will be available April 1 in the MFA Shops, retail bookstores and online. It is one of several titles dedicated to jewelry that have been produced by MFA Publications in recent years.

Oscar Heyman is known within the jewelry industry for creating pieces for some of the most prestigious jewelry brands in world, including Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, Shreve, Crump & Low and Black, Starr & Frost.

“For more than a century, Oscar Heyman & Brothers … has maintained a national reputation for outstanding ornaments set with superior gemstones,” Markowitz said. “Until recently, the Oscar Heyman name was unknown outside the jewelry world, as the company preferred anonymity and discretion, but today the brand is synonymous with dazzling, high-style jewels.”

Oscar Heyman & Brothers has been a family business since its establishment, now in its third generation. The company’s founding brothers, Oscar and Nathan, apprenticed at a workshop that produced high-style ornaments for the Russian court jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé before leaving Eastern Europe for New York. Within a few years, they established their own firm, distinctive for dynamic and contemporary designs, fine craftsmenship, technological sophistication and high-quality materials. Eventually, the other Heyman brothers joined the growing business, which remains entirely autonomous—maintaining in-house production of jewelry from inception through completion—to this day.

“It’s inspiring to see how far Oscar Heyman has come since my grandfather and great uncles started the business,” said Tom Heyman, partner at Oscar Heyman & Brothers. “Readers will come to appreciate our rich history and unique combination of engineering capabilities, technical skill and artistic style, which enable us to continue to create one-of-a-kind pieces.”

The publication tells the firm’s history from its beginnings at the turn of the 20th Century and traces its growth and innovation decade by decade. Nearly 70 ornaments are highlighted, demonstrating how the business adapted new aesthetics in response to the changing desires of consumers. The earliest examples include a 1929 platinum, diamond and emerald brooch from the MFA’s collection. Originally owned and frequently worn by the heiress and art collector Marjorie Merriweather Post, the brooch fuses design elements of Art Deco and the Edwardian era.

Major milestones detailed in the book include the firm’s participation in two New York World’s Fairs. In 1939, Oscar Heyman & Brothers manufactured ornaments for four prominent retailers on display at the “House of Jewels,” one of the most extravagant exhibition pavilions. Although unknown to the public, the firm’s involvement in the exhibition solidified its reputation among clients, as many retailers recognized the signature floral designs, exquisite craftsmanship and superior gems. The next New York World’s Fair, held in 1964, did not have a dedicated jewelry pavilion but Oscar Heyman & Brothers designed the official commemorative necklace in partnership with the Linde Star Company.

The publication also contains 15 design drawings from the Oscar Heyman Archive. These include designs for patriotic World War II ornaments, such as brooches featuring the American eagle, as well as for a diamond and emerald necklace that was made in 1956 and gifted decades later to Elizabeth Taylor by Michael Jackson.

Harry Winston Goes Contemporary With New ‘HW Logo’ Collection

The luxury jewelry house known for its sparkling white diamonds is placing a focus on various colors of gold with the brand’s new “HW Logo” collection. In addition, with its styling, the way it can be worn and its price, series of pendants, earrings, bracelets and rings is an attempt to reach out to a younger consumer.

As the name implies the collection brings Harry Winston’s signature logo to the forefront of the jewels. The iconic “HW” logo with its lozenge shape has been the symbol of the jewelry and watch brand for more than five decades. It is based on the structural silhouette of the emerald-cut, the preferred diamond cut of the brand’s founder, Harry Winston.

HW Logo yellow gold band ring. Retails for $2,400

The pieces are sleek, modern and understated, fashioned out of 18k yellow, rose and white gold. Being Harry Winston, round brilliant white diamonds also make an appearance either sprinkled on the jewels or placed in rows. There’s a balanced geometric quality to the design with the logo appearing in a number of ways that complement the use of diamonds. Balance can also be used to describe the offering in the collection. Each style appears in white, yellow and rose gold.

HW Logo rose gold diamond pendant. Retails for $2,300

While the styling may be on the modern side, the use of the “HW” logo cements the collection with its roots.

The jewels are designed to be worn alone or layered and the rings can be purchased as wedding bands, both nods to a more youthful clientele.

HW Logo white gold diamond earrings. retails for $3,100

Prior to this collection, Harry Winston only had a very small offering of yellow gold with a few pieces of its Lily Cluster collection. This is the first time the brand is using rose gold.

The price, if not directly related to a younger clientele, should certainly attract a broader buyer as it ranges from an accessible $2,300 for the pendant necklace to $20,000 for the bangle. The price also appeals to gift giving as the upcoming holiday season approaches.

The collection is available at Harry Winston boutiques worldwide.

Harry Winston Opens 12th US Salon In Houston

The House of Harry Winston opened its first retail salon in Houston in the River Oaks District shopping center.

Among the architectural highlights, the floor of the foyer entrance, made of black marble from Belgium and white marble from Colorado, creates an image of a round brilliant diamond. The hanging chandelier, which seem to be in the shape of Harry Winston cluster diamond jewels, are custom-made in Italy.

The soft taupe and grey color palette complements the furnishings, custom-made in Italy, which combine black lacquer and antique bronze furniture fabric with contemporary lines. The walled display cases are made in Switzerland.

There are dedicated areas for high jewelry, bridal, timepiece and fine jewelry collections; as well private rooms for more personalized service. For more privacy, the salon has a VIP entrance with private parking on the second level.

The store in the River Oaks District, a 14-acre outdoor luxury boutique shopping center, marks Harry Winston’s 12th US salon.

The US luxury brand is owned by the Swiss conglomerate, Swatch Group.

Donald Trump’s Huge Harry Winston Engagement Ring To Marla Maples Sells For $300,000

The 7.45-carat Harry Winston diamond engagement ring that Donald Trump gave to his second wife, Marla Maples, sold at auction Wednesday for $300,000.

The rectangular, steep-cut diamond on a platinum ring was sold to a private collector whose name was not immediately released during the “Fine Jewels & Timepieces” sale at the Joseph DuMouchelle auction house in Birmingham, Mich. The sides of the ring are channel set with 16 graduated, straight baguette cut diamonds.

The ring had an estimate of $300,000 to $350,000. DuMouchelle reportedly said prior to the sale that the estimate was based on the diamond ring’s intrinsic value. The celebrity significance did not enter into the price.

However, in a statement following the sale, DuMouchelle said he was pleased with the price it fetched.

“We are thrilled that the ring sold for the estimated price,” he said. “We're happy that the Maples-Trump Diamond now has a new home. It's an extraordinary Harry Winston ring and we hope that the new owner will enjoy the rarity of its beauty.”

Marla Maples reportedly sold the ring to a collector in 1999 for $110,000, following their divorce in the same year. The couple married in 1991.

Robin Thicke Sings A New Tune As Harry Winston Ambassador

Robin Thicke performs at the Harry Winston Opus 14 unveiling in Baden-Baden

Harry Winston is known for placing its high jewelry on some of the world’s biggest and most beautiful stars of the 20th and 21th Centuries. However, in its 83-year history the luxury jewelry and watch brand has never had an official spokesperson.

This changed Tuesday when the brand used the unveiling of the Opus 14 in Baden-Baden, Germany, to announce that recording artist Robin Thicke is the new brand ambassador for Harry Winston timepieces.

Thicke appeared on stage following the Opus 14 presentation and later in the evening to perform many of his hit songs accompanied by dancers during the 1950s themed event. After the event ended he stayed around talking and taking photos with several of the invited guests.

Thicke becomes the first ambassador for the New York City-based brand, which was acquired by the Swatch Group in 2013.

At a press conference the following day, Nayla Hayek, CEO of Harry Winston, said there was never any search for a brand ambassador. She met Thicke in Cannes and thought he’d be good for the brand, adding that it will be a long-term commitment and wasn’t just supporting the Opus timepiece.

“He’s not the ambassador of Opus,” she said. “He is the ambassador of Harry Winston watches.”

Thicke is one of the world’s best-known singer, songwriter and producers today, and has worked with several prominent artists, including Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Mary J. Blige. He rose to worldwide fame in 2013 for his hit single "Blurred Lines.”

It is also that song that placed Thicke and Pharrell Williams on the losing end of a $7.4 million copyright infringement case (later reduced to $5.3 million) brought against them by Marvin Gaye’s family. The case is under appeal. He also had a messy public divorce with his former wife Paula Patton.

Hayek is seemingly undeterred with these issues, saying that Thicke has already been “very positive to the brand and a very professional ambassador for the brand.”

Harry Winston Unveils The Opus 14 ‘Jukebox’

America was always a significant part of the Harry Winston brand’s soul and its new owners took to creating a product that honors both the brand and the country.

The Opus 14, the first Opus timepiece launched by Harry Winston under Swatch Group ownership, takes its inspiration from a nostalgic 1950s view of America, most specifically the jukebox, which brought American rock ‘n’ roll to public venues all over the world.

The main feature of the Opus 14 is an automaton complication that works like the turntable of a jukebox. It reveals four disks housed in what Harry Winston calls a “store.” Each disk shows a specific display: local time, GMT time, the date and a star bearing the signature of Mr. Harry Winston, a reference to the stars of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Harry Winston and the Swatch Group turned to Swiss watchmakers Franck Orny and Johnny Girardin of Telos Watch, to devise and build the timepiece. At a press conference Wednesday, Nayla Hayek, Harry Winston CEO, and Marc Hayek, Blancpain director, said the concept of the watch was already in place when Swatch Group aquired Harry Winston about three years ago but they immediately fell for the idea.

“The first time we saw this project we fell in love with it,” said Nayla Hayek. “It’s Hollywood. It’s America. It’s Harry Winston.”

Added Marc Hayek, “We really wanted to make it happen. Seeing the idea and bringing it to life is fantastic.”

It was a three-and-a-half year project with done primarily within the Harry Winston watchmaking facilities in Plan-Les-Ouates, Switzerland—with the exception of testing the watch’s accuracy and endurance, which were done at the testing facilities of Blancpain, also owned by the Swatch Group.

The time in hours is already shown on the top disk (the minutes are shown on a separate retrograde display). When pressed for the first time, a push-piece activates a moving arm that picks the disk up and sets it onto the platform to be read like a turntable. While the disk displaying the local time remains in place at 9 o'clock, the chosen GMT, date or star disk is positioned on this platform. Pressing the push-piece a second time once the disk is in place reactivates the arm, which moves the disk back into the store. The first activation takes five seconds and returning the disk to the original position takes three seconds.

The power reserve for the patented HW4601 caliber uses two separate barrels, one for the automaton mechanism and the other for the clock operation. It provides 68 hours for the clock operation and enough power for five back-and-forth disk movements. Although the power reserves are separate and function independently, they are driven by a shared winding crown. A second winding crown is used to set the time. In addition, push-pieces on the lugs at 12 o'clock allow the wearer to correct the date and GMT.

The multi-layered movement and display resulted in a very large watch, even by Opus standards. It’s housed in a case measuring 57.4mm by 21.9mm.

Design details of the black watch include a red, white and blue color palette and a two-tone insignia bearing the number 14 in a style reminiscent of the Route 66 road sign. These elements and others are designed to recall the rock 'n roll era and the emblematic diner aesthetic, the company said.

The timepiece, with a total of 1,066 components, retails for 428,000 Swiss francs ($434,600) and is limited to 50 pieces.

The event unveiling the Opus 14 was originally planned for Los Angeles but there are several watch-related events in Switzerland at the same time so they instead opted for the tourist destination of Baden-Baden, a small city in the Germany’s Black Forest renowned for its natural springs and spas. Despite this, Harry Winston took great pains to create the illusion of 1950s Americana in Baden-Baden, with a bevy of 1950s American cars, a staging area set up as a 1950s diner, women servers on roller skates and 1950s rock ‘n’ roll playing throughout the evening.

The scene certainly played into the nostalgic American theme of the watch.

The Harry Winston Art Deco Collection

When Harry Winston founded his eponymous jewelry brand in 1932, the Art Deco scene was in its heyday and its signature designs personified the luxury and glamour of the period.

For its latest collection, Harry Winston continues this heritage with six colorless diamond and platinum jewels that underscore the distinctive architectural style of the 1930s. Titled, “Art Deco by Harry Winston,” the collection evokes the iconic elegance of the period with combinations of round brilliant and baguette diamonds set in a symmetrical geometric shapes and angular forms. All of the pieces represent a singular sculptural motif, whether it is used as a central design element or repeated.

The collection consists of a diamond sautoir, single and multi-motif diamond bracelets, single motif diamond earrings, a diamond pendant and a ladies jewelry timepiece using the same motif. The pieces represent the refined and colorless version of the Art Deco design period.

3 UCLA Pediatric Physician-Scientists Named Harry Winston Fellows

Harry Winston, Inc. and the UCLA Children’s Discovery and Innovation Institute have named the first three recipients of the inaugural Harry Winston Fellowships.

You may remember that the luxury jewelry and watch brand presented a $1 million gift to establish the fellowship that supports the work of young pediatric physician-scientists from Mattel Children’ s Hospital UCLA who are conducting research to prevent, treat and cure disease and illness in children.

“Through the Harry Winston Fellowship Fund, we are … supporting these young physician-scientists whose vital contributions to pediatric research will help to enable healthy and brilliant futures for children around the world,” said Nayla Hayek, Harry Winston CEO.

The Harry Winston Fellows represent physician-scientists in their second or third year of fellowship at UCLA (a period of specialized training following a doctor’s residency) who have demonstrated a commitment to a career in academic medicine. The fellows, who have all shown unparalleled excellence in clinical and research skills, are also extremely bright, exceptionally hardworking and driven by a desire to make a significant difference in their field.

Harry Winston Fellows will be chosen annually by an internal selection committee led by Dr. Sherin Devaskar, physician-in-chief of Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA and executive director of the UCLA Children’s Discovery and Innovation Institute.

“The Harry Winston Fellowship Fund will support the best and brightest subspecialty fellows toward becoming exceptional academic physician-scientists who will go on to collaborate and establish networks locally, nationally and globally,” Devaskar said.

The recipients will be formally announced at a reception held on Oct. 9 in Los Angeles.

The 2014 – 2015 Harry Winston Fellows are:

Dr. Kristina Adachi, a third-year fellow in the division of pediatric infectious diseases. Adachi’s work focuses on untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during pregnancy and the deleterious impact of these infections on infants' health.

Dr. Leslie Kimura, a second year fellow in the division of pediatric endocrinology. The incidence of diabetes, particularly type 2, is on the rise, but drugs to treat it have not focused on the largest tissue utilizer of glucose—skeletal muscle.

Dr. Edward Talya, a second year fellow in the division of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. His research focuses on patients with short bowel syndrome, which is a disease where the patient is missing enough of the small intestine that they cannot get the nutrition they need from eating.
